Could Medical Compression Stockings Help with Your Foot Ailments?

One interesting clinical study was published in the Dermatologic Surgery Journal in 2004, which involved 12 volunteers at risk of developing evening edema (leg swelling). The volume of swelling in the lower legs of volunteers was first measured in the morning, then seven hours later. Volunteers wore compression stockings featuring different compression levels during the day. As the experiment continued for a four-day period, volunteers who didn’t compress their legs in the daytime had an average evening edema value of 62.4 milliliters. Whereas people who used stockings featuring a light level of compression saw edema of 30.3 milliliters. Firmer socks reduced swelling to 59.1 milliliters.

Researchers concluded that compression stockings with graduated compression in the 10 to 21 mmHg range can reduce and even totally prevent leg swelling from stemming while standing up for long hours during the day.

Varicose Veins

Medical compression stockings are also excellent for preventing varicose veins or lowering the severity of their symptoms. Regular support pantyhose isn’t going to do the trick for people who are at serious risk for, or already suffer from varicose veins. Compression therapy makes it much easier for blood to climb up the legs, even if valves in the veins aren’t functioning properly anymore.
