Heel pain is a common occurrence in people who spend a lot of time standing, whether it’s from exercise or having a job that requires you to be on your feet for long hours. Typically, heel pain symptoms stem from one main problem, most people wear improper footwear. When you’re sporting heels while working retail or tight boots while working outdoors, primary conditions that can result include plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. 

Plantar Fasciitis

One of the most common causes of heel pain isplantar fasciitis. This pain originates from the ligament called plantar fascia, which connects the heel bone to the toes. When under strain, the plantar fascia becomes swollen and inflamed, causing pain on the bottom of your foot when you stand or walk.

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

  • Pronation of your feet 
  • High arches
  • Flat feet
  • Walking, standing, or running for extended periods of time
  • Wearing worn out shoes or ones that don’t fit right
  • Tight calf muscles
  • Tight Achilles tendons
  • Being overweight

Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis

To reduce the pain in the plantar fascia, the main treatment is allowing it time to heal. This means trying to stay off your feet as much as possible. Icing the area for 15 to 20 minutes a few times a day and ibuprofen can help reduce the swelling. Stretching can also relieve some of the pain and help prevent further issues.

To keep this condition from worsening, it’s also most important to wear the right footwear. Shoes that provide ample support and fit will prevent any more injury to your plantar fascia.

Heel Spur 

A heel spur is a deposit of calcium, which results in an abnormal bone growth on the bottom of the heel. Usually, the growth is seen extending toward the toes. Heel spurs can be diagnosed by a doctor as they can be seen clearly on x-ray. Even though heel spurs can cause you heel pain when walking, due to the spur pressing into the tissue of your foot; it’s common for this pain to recede and go away.

Causes of Heel Spurs

  • An uneven walk
  • Being overweight
  • Wearing worn out shoes that no longer fit well
  • Spending a long time on your feet and lifting heavy objects
  • Decreased ligament elasticity due to aging

Treatment for Heel Spurs

Although some cases require removal of the bone spur with surgery, most cases are resolved with icing, stretching and rest. It’s highly recommended to find proper footwear to relieve symptoms and prevent further injuring the area as well.
